The sectors hit hardest in January were finance and insurance, professional and business services, and technology — precisely the sectors that employ the largest concentrations of white-collar knowledge workers. The cuts were not uniformly distributed across roles. They were targeted: repetitive, documentation-heavy, and information-processing positions were disproportionately affected.

The distinction between 2025-era AI and what arrives in 2027 is not one of degree — it is one of kind. Current AI systems are powerful assistants: they generate text, code, analysis, and summaries. They are excellent at completing individual tasks when prompted. What they are not yet doing at scale is planning and executing multi-step workflows autonomously — taking a complex objective, decomposing it into subtasks, executing each step, handling exceptions, and delivering a completed output without human intervention at each stage.

What You Can Actually Do About It
